On the 8th of February 2024, Peterborough Cathedral resonated with the harmonious voices of two remarkable Year 7 Stamford Schools students, Ilia and Evangeline (Evie), during the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service ceremony, this was held in honour of Chinese Community in Peterborough, the only recipient in Cambridgeshire, and the only Chinese Community in England to receive such award.
Their rendition of "Loyal Brave and True" from the beloved movie "Mulan" left the audience spellbound, earning them widespread acclaim and resounding applause. Their performance added an extra layer of joy to the already celebratory atmosphere of the event.
Reflecting on her experience, Evie shared, “I had such an amazing time celebrating the Lunar New Year with the Chinese Community in Peterborough. The evening was full of songs and dances and delicious food. Having the opportunity to sing at the event with Ilia was such an honor, and I am thankful for the experience!”
Ilia, equally delighted, recounted, “I performed in the Peterborough Cathedral at the Chinese Community in Peterborough Event hosted and arranged by my mum, with my friend Evie. There were so many entertainments to enjoy and some food halfway through. Everyone was very happy and engaged with each performance. I loved performing with my friend Evie as we sang Loyal Brave and True. Evie and I also helped to sell raffle tickets at the event, and we received over £100 in donations for the community. We had people from BBC Look East broadcasting the event live. It was such a delight to be there and perform to over 250 people.”
Their heart warming performance and dedication to community service truly exemplify the spirit of volunteerism and cultural celebration that the King’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to honour.
