Art Scholarships - Stamford School

The programme

Art Scholarships recognise exceptional creative ability, original thinking and artistic potential. Through workshops, gallery visits, lectures, competitions and collaborative projects, scholars develop their practice, share ideas and build strong portfolios.

Sixth Form scholars benefit from dedicated studio space, specialist clinics, commissions and guidance on creative courses and careers. They may also work with Old Stamfordian creatives and represent the department at key school events.

Being a Scholar also allows students to mix with creative students across the other year groups, share ideas, learn from each other and be inspired by like-minded people. It is expected that scholars will enter competitions and exhibitions organised by the Art Department.

The programme has supported students in gaining places at leading institutions, including the Courtauld Institute of Art and the universities of Oxford, Edinburgh and Leeds, alongside recognition in prestigious national competitions.

Scholarship guide

Year 9

Successful candidates should demonstrate:

Creative ability, curiosity and an original approach.

A genuine interest in art beyond the classroom.

Confidence discussing their work, influences and experiences.

Assessment will include:

Presenting a physical or digital portfolio of work created beyond lessons.

Discussing your portfolio with other applicants in a group critique.

Completing a timed still-life drawing.

Year 12

Successful candidates should demonstrate:

A strong, independently developed portfolio.

Creative ambition, technical skill and an individual approach.

Readiness to contribute to the Art Department and wider School.

An interest in creative courses, careers and professional practice

Assessment will include:

Presenting and discussing a portfolio of recent work.

Explaining your ideas, influences and creative development.

Discussing your artistic ambitions and plans beyond A Level..
