Year 5 Pupil Lorcán Races to National Victory at British Hill Climb Championships

While many enjoyed a well-earned half-term break, Year 5 pupil Lorcán took on one of the toughest challenges in British cycling – the National Hill Climb Championships in Matlock.

The event, held on the steep and winding Bank Road, saw over 500 competitors, from young riders to elite professionals, tackle a gruelling 1km ascent with an average gradient of 12.46% and sections reaching a punishing 20%. With more than 1,500 spectators cheering on from the roadside, the atmosphere rivalled that of a professional Grand Tour.

Racing against some of the best riders in the country – including a recent World Junior Champion – Lorcán produced a remarkable performance. Not only did he finish first in his age group, but he also set a new course record, an incredible achievement for such a young competitor.

This result makes Lorcán a national age group champion, and a testament to his dedication, determination, and passion for the sport. His success reflects the drive and enthusiasm that Stamford pupils bring to every pursuit, on and off the track.
