Success for Polina in National Translation Competition

Polina Whiteford, Year 12 at Stamford High School, has achieved success in a national translation competition organised by the University Of Sheffield.Polina's entry was named as one of the ten winners of the completion. She won a £25 book token and the chance to take part in a virtual workshop held by the languages and culture department at the University of Sheffield.The competition was held virtually and required all entrants to translate a passage from Russian into English. Candidates were asked to engage with the deeper cultural meanings of the passage and were judged on style, register and fluency.In the virtual workshop, which took place for the shortlisted winners, Polina got the chance to discuss translation in greater depth with experts from the University of Sheffield. They were given examples of translations and were tasked to discuss why some translations of texts were better than others. Polina also got the chance to take part in a Q&A at the end.Polina decided to enter the competition to expand her vocabulary and engage with wider Russian Literature. She is currently studying Maths, Economics, Psychology and Russian and hopes to study Finance at University.When asked about the competition, Polina said: "The competition was a great experience and definitely provided useful tips for future work with languages.
