Stamford Secures Top Ten Percent Finish in National GCHQ Challenge

Students from Year 9 produced an impressive display in the GCHQ National Language Competition, tackling a demanding series of linguistic and codebreaking challenges across a full week in mid-November.

Working before school, through lunchtimes and again at home, the teams approached the tasks with real commitment. The competition required far more than language knowledge. Students were pushed to think laterally, recognise patterns at speed and apply logic under pressure, mirroring the analytical mindset used in real intelligence work.

Their effort translated into outstanding results against a very large national field, with more than 2,500 teams competing across the country. Three Stamford teams finished with strong regional and national placements:

  • Team Honest Mole (Tait, Milo, Dylan and Ayaan): 6,705 points, 42nd in the region and 275th nationally, placing them firmly within the top ten percent
  • Team Enduring Frog (Chloe, Barney, Ewan and Eliza): 6,210 points, 57th in the region and 342nd nationally
  • Team Eager Rhino (Gabby, Freya, Flo and Lyra): 5,060 points, 81st in the region and 533rd nationally

It was an excellent collective effort that highlighted the intellectual curiosity and problem solving strength within the year group. A superb achievement and well deserved recognition for all involved.
