18 Year 10 Stamford School students competed in a language competition at RAF Wittering in which they were asked to coordinate a humanitarian aid mission on the fictitious island of Gaia that had been hit by a hurricane.
The day began with a keynote speaker who is an Airforce linguist who spoke to the students about the importance of learning a language and how vital they can be in life and death, time sensitive situations.
During the day, the German, Russian and Spanish teams had to listen to governmental reports and emergency reports from residents on the island, organise the plane they would take and supplies that would be required by talking to the quartermaster, interview members of the police, the RAF and the Health Department and then write a communication for a radio broadcast and present their mission to an RAF panel - all in the target language.
Students learned the importance of working in a team, managing tasks under time constraints and delegating tasks having considered each person’s skill set.
We were delighted that the Russian team from Stamford were awarded first place in the competition for their presentation and performance across the day. There were also special mentions for students from the German and Spanish teams praising their language and leadership skills.
