Last night, Stamford School hosted a captivating lecture as part of its ongoing lecture series, featuring financial journalist and broadcaster Iona Bain. The lecture, which drew students, parents and the local community offered practical advice on money management and career planning.
Bain, whose background is in music and who studied at University of Oxford, shared her personal journey from the uncertainty of life after university during the 2008 financial crash to establishing the influential Young Money blog in 2011. Transitioning to TV and broadcasting in 2023, she emphasized the importance of pursuing what you truly want and embracing the digital world despite fears of scrutiny.
The evening included an interview conducted by students Disha (Year 8) and Rebecca (Year 12), who explored Bain’s approach to financial literacy for young people. Topics ranged from budgeting strategies, like the 50/30/20 rule, to understanding spending personalities, “Stingy Sarah, Smart Sharon, and Splashy Salim”, and managing debt responsibly.
Bain also highlighted the importance of planning for the future with emergency funds, workplace pensions, and dreaming funds, quoting Gloria Steinem to illustrate that dreaming itself is a form of planning. Her accessible advice encouraged students to take charge of their finances, demystify money management, and start building good habits early.
The lecture left our young attendees inspired to approach both their financial and personal futures with clarity, confidence, and ambition.
