Southfields Sculpture Unveiled Following Student Collaboration with Professional Artist

Stamford School has unveiled a new sculpture in Southfields, marking the culmination of a collaborative project between students and professional artist and sculptor James Sutton.

Earlier this term, Year 13 art scholars and prefects Olly, Finlay, Sophia, Tallulah and Elena spent a day in Gainsborough working alongside Sutton to develop designs for the commissioned piece. The sculpture draws on the Spede Bird, the historic emblem of the school, reinterpreting its symbolism through a contemporary sculptural form.

The project offered students a rare insight into professional artistic practice. Alongside developing the creative concept, they explored the practical realities of working as an artist, including budgeting, commissioning and the marketing of artwork. Under expert guidance, students were taught welding, angle grinding and soldering techniques, producing individual pieces which they were able to take away as part of the experience.

Now installed and officially unveiled, the Southfields sculpture stands as a visible expression of the school’s heritage and creative ambition. More importantly, it reflects a meaningful learning experience, one that combined technical skill, professional understanding and collaborative design.

The project exemplifies Stamford School’s commitment to providing authentic, real-world opportunities that extend learning beyond the classroom, enabling students to engage seriously with their disciplines and contribute lasting work to the school community.
