More success for Stamford Sailors

Issy Leetch, Year 11 at Stamford High School, alongside her partner Sol, who attends UCC, has been awarded the prize for First Junior team at the 29er Grand Prix at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. The pair took part in the 29er competition (raced in the 29er dinghy - designed for young adults), competing among 73 other boats across the weekend of the 19-20 September, in the first of a series of Grand Prix which will occur throughout the year.Issy and Sol came 29th out of 40 boats in the Gold fleet and can now apply to be considered for a 29er national squad. Their performance also awarded them the title of First U16 team overall. As only their second 29er event (with the first competed pre-lockdown, in January), tough conditions made for a challenging competition. The gusty winds and choppy waters in Portland Harbour required perseverance and resilience to perform consistently. The competition lasted two days with four races competed each day; at the end of the first day, boats split into two fleets based on their performance (Gold fleet for the fastest half, and silver for the remaining half), with Issy and Sol making the cut for Gold. The pair are now preparing for their next Grand Prix, which will occur in October, also at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.Issy and Sol - Stamford SailorsIssy and Sol - Stamford SailorsFor more news considering sailing at Stamford, please click here, and follow the Schools' sailing Twitter account, @SpedeSailing.
