Senior School Admissions ‎

Welcome to Stamford Senior School Admissions

Choosing the right secondary school is an important decision in your child's educational journey. At Stamford School, our admissions process helps us build a bespoke, individual picture of each child upon entry, ensuring that Stamford is the right place for your son or daughter.

Our key entry points for Stamford School are Year 7 and Year 9; however, we also welcome applications for entry to Year 8 and 10 throughout the year. If you are in any doubt, please contact our admissions team who are more than happy to help and advise you.

Mrs Antonia Scott and Mrs Claire Mountain are our Senior School Registrars and would be delighted to guide you through our admissions process.

We very much look forward to meeting you and your family.

Stamford School Admissions Journey

Year 7 Assessment and Interview Day:

All students applying for Year 7 will complete an assessment and take part in an informal interview. The assessment includes online tests in verbal, non-verbal, and spatial reasoning (3D shapes and patterns), plus a 30-minute handwritten creative writing task.

The informal interview is led by a member of our academic staff but is not academically focused. It’s a chance for us to get to know each child, their hobbies, interests, family life, and what they enjoy inside and outside school. Interviews last around 15–20 minutes.

Year 9 and Mid-Year Assessment and Interview:

For Year 9 and Mid-Year applications, students will be asked to sit an age-appropriate online assessment based on their current curriculum. This will consist of online computerised tests in verbal and non-verbal reasoning, and spatial sections (3D shapes and patterns).

All students will also take part in an informal interview with an academic member of staff, although the questions will not be academically focused. Instead, they will be asked questions about their hobbies, co-curricular interests outside of school, favourite subjects, family, or a recent holiday.

Offer of a place

The offer of a place at Stamford School is based on the following criteria:

  • Meeting our academic criteria following individual assessments based on the child's year group-specific assessment. i.e. Year 7 Entry Assessment Examination.
  • Receipt of a satisfactory school reference.
  • A successful interview with a member of the academic staff.
  • Receipt of the latest school reports at any stage of entry.

As an Old Stamfordian myself, I have always been drawn to the idea of bringing my kids to this school, which is a testament in itself. It was my wife who was eventually won over by our tour guide on one of the many visits to Stamford - "If our children turn out anything like that young man, I'd be very happy". Stamford's down-to-earth approach balances the academia, co-curricular, and sport equation. Since joining Stamford, they've made a lovely group of friends while expanding their academic and sporting experiences. Personally, it's also great to connect with other OS friends who have also brought their children to the school - an enduring legacy.

I just wanted to thank you for the very warm welcome that we received at Stamford School this morning. Honestly, the tour, the information shared and the welcoming environment were faultless and we are so grateful for the time and care that you took for us.

What particularly stood out to me was the culture of the school — the friendliness and warmth of both staff and pupils, the emphasis on developing “rounded and grounded” young people, and the commitment to helping each child discover and fulfil their individual potential. It really felt like an environment in which our boys could be happy, supported and encouraged to thrive.
