Sixth Form House Singing Marks a Century of Tradition

On Friday, Stamford School has proudly celebrated the Centenary Year of House Singing, marking 100 years of one of the most spirited and enduring traditions in our school calendar, this time with our Sixth Form House Singing competition.

The Centennial of House Singing brought with it all the hallmarks of a fiercely contested competition. House colours were worn with pride, sequins caught the light, ribbons adorned blazers and, in one memorable moment, even a top hat made an appearance. The atmosphere was electric from the opening note to the final applause.

Students sang with commitment and confidence, performing not simply for points but for House honour. From powerful ensemble pieces to more intricate chamber arrangements, the standard was exceptionally high, reflecting both the depth of musical talent across the School and the pride taken in this historic occasion.

A double triumph for Eliot in both the House Choir and Ensemble competitions was met with well-earned celebration. Mrs Aluzzi, alongside student Heads of House Ted and Carys, led their House with energy and assurance, and the result was a performance of clarity, cohesion and conviction that secured a memorable victory.

Cavell delivered a beautifully controlled rendition of Blackbird, earning first place in the Chamber Choir category. The performance balanced musical sensitivity with technical precision, demonstrating the care and rehearsal that underpin success at this level.

Our sincere thanks go to Alastair McPhee for his expert adjudication and thoughtful feedback. We are equally grateful to Mr Ware for his leadership and organisation of the House teams, to the Music Department for their meticulous preparation and sound support, and to Mr Spalding for his invaluable work behind the scenes. We were also delighted to welcome back Mr Brown to share in the centenary celebrations.

One hundred years on, House Singing remains far more than a competition. It is a collective expression of identity, loyalty and shared endeavour. The centenary has been a fitting reminder that tradition endures not through nostalgia, but through participation. Judging by the quality of music and the strength of House spirit on display, the next century is in safe hands.
