Old Stamfordian Iwan Thomas (OS 92) has finally received his World Athletics Championships gold medal, ending a remarkable 28-year wait.
Iwan was part of Great Britain’s men’s 4x400m relay team at the 1997 World Championships in Athens, where the squad originally finished second behind the United States. However, years later the American team was disqualified after it was revealed that team member Antonio Pettigrew had committed an anti-doping violation. This ruling upgraded the British quartet to world champions.
The medal ceremony, delayed by nearly three decades, recognises the achievements of Iwan and his teammates in one of the most competitive eras of athletics.
Reflecting on his career, Iwan has often spoken about the pride he feels representing his country at the highest level. This long-overdue recognition now secures his place in athletics history as a World Champion.
Stamford School is proud to celebrate Iwan’s achievement and the perseverance it represents, congratulating him on finally receiving the gold medal he deserves.
