National success for Chloe in BBC Young Journalist Competition

Chloe Tinton, Year 13 at Stamford High School, has been shortlisted within the BBC Young Journalist of the Year competition, placing her entry in the top 10%-15% nationally. To enter the competition, candidates were required to write a piece focusing on one of three themes; 'me, myself and I', 'the world around me' or  'coronavirus'. Chloe chose 'the world around me' and has written an opinionated piece on the social media platform 'TikTok' considering some of the negative features of the platform and discussing how it could shape future social media use. After submitting her piece in October 2020, and following a telephone interview, Chloe's piece was subsequently shortlisted as one of the top 10%-15% of all entries in the 16-18 age category. The next stage of the competition sees regional winners announced before the national final, where successful candidates pieces are published by the BBC.Chloe's motivation to enter this competition stems from her keen interest in journalism; initially interested in pursuing a future in broadcasting and radio, she has discovered her interest in written journalism following this competition. In a discussion with the Schools, Chloe said: "We shouldn’t underestimate ourselves - I didn’t have any confidence but threw myself into this competititon, regardless, and realised that actually my abilities were higher than I credited myself for! It has been a hugely rewarding experience".Chloe currently studies English Literature, French and Geography at Stamford Sixth Form. She continues to seek opportunities for further written experience, regularly submits entries into the SES Blog and aspires to complete a qualification with the 'National Council for the Training of Journalists' upon finishing her education at Stamford. We wish Chloe the best of luck in the next stages of the competition and with her future plans. To read more news from Stamford Sixth Form, please click here. why stamford banner
