Today, we were delighted to welcome Barney Ronay, award-winning Chief Sports Writer at The Guardian, to speak to students in Years 10–13.
One of the most distinctive voices in modern sports journalism, Barney has reported on major global tournaments, Premier League title races and the shifting culture of elite sport for over two decades. Alongside his work at The Guardian, he is a regular contributor to the Football Weekly podcast and has written for publications including New Statesman, When Saturday Comes, The Cricketer and The Blizzard.
He is the author of several books, including How Football (Almost) Came Home, and has received significant industry recognition. A two-time ‘Writer of the Year’ winner at the Football Supporters' Association awards, he has also won the Best Football Journalist award at the Sports Journalists' Association Awards, alongside further SJA honours for Columnist of the Year and Popular Culture Commentator of the Year.
In a wide-ranging and candid address, Barney reflected on highlights from his career, from reporting at World Cups to breaking into a fiercely competitive industry. He spoke thoughtfully about sportswashing, the commercial pressures shaping modern sport, and the realities of working in national media. Students gained a clear understanding of the intellectual rigour, resilience and independence required to succeed at the highest level of journalism.
It was a privilege to host one of the country’s most respected journalists for what proved to be an insightful and thought-provoking session.
