Our Year 7 to 9 academic scholars have had a wonderful afternoon off timetable with The Philosophy Man, Tom Bigglestone. The scholars took part in two sessions:
1) Speculate to Accumulate:
This is a strategy game involving a range of puzzles and riddles. Teams start with a bank of $200. The completion of riddles and tasks earns more. Each guess, attempt, clue or question has a cost! As well as the challenge of solving the individual puzzles and riddles, there is the strategic question of whether to hoard points and guess sparingly, or to take greater risks in speculating with a view to solving more riddles more quickly. This activity is a challenge in lateral thinking, collaboration, listening and building on other people's ideas and above all taking intellectual risks.
2) Argumentag wrestling tournament:
This is a fast-paced debating game in which students have to think on their feet to defend their position in a range of arguments against an opposing team. They have to support one another, being both willing to take their turn in “the ring” and willing to see their place amongst their teammates. This activity develops boldness, spontaneity and confidence, as well as the willingness to enjoy taking an intellectual risk by exposing your thinking to the challenge of others.
