By coming through the East Regional rounds without conceding a goal and scoring 24 goals, confidence was high in the Stamford School ranks coming into the Under16s Nottinghamshire Sport National Finals ran by England Hockey at the end of April. After finishing as runners-up at the U14 level to Whitgift, the boys were determined to finish one better this time around! In any national finals, there are huge hurdles to overcome and to be drawn in the same group as Whitgift, as well as playing them first, Stamford knew that this game would be crucial with regard to rest of the tournament. The team played well finishing second in their group which secured passage through to the third and fourth place playoff. It was to be a hard-fought battle against Cranleigh School which resulted in Stamford finishing fourth nationally in the country.Mr B Morris, Hockey Coach at Stamford School, at the end of the tournament said,“Knowing the squad so well, there will be a tinge of disappointment from the lads by finishing fourth. The progress that they have made, not just in this year but for five years from Year Seven is incredible. To play in three National Finals out of three, to be crowned East Regional Champions three times and win copious of other tournaments is an incredible achievement. They have memories to last a lifetime – they should cherish these and be very proud of their achievements.”
