Embarking on an adventure-filled geography trip, our Year 9 Stamford School students visited Calshot. This trip was designed to bring their studies to life with hands-on experiences.
At the Calshot Activity Centre, students enjoyed velodrome cycling, archery, crate stacking and much more, these activities were not only fun but also fostered teamwork and physical skills.
The river study on Dark Water was a highlight, where students measured the river’s width, depth, and velocity from source to mouth. This practical approach deepened their understanding of river dynamics. In the classroom, students then analysed their findings, creating graphs to visualize changes in the river's characteristics. This analysis helped solidify their grasp of river processes.
The trip also included a coastal management investigation at Lepe Beach looking at the various measures used to protect the coastline from erosion. Students also examined longshore drift on Calshot spit itself, by developing their own hypotheses and data collection methods before analysing and presenting their findings back to the group.
This trip provided invaluable hands-on learning, enhancing students’ geographical knowledge and offering memorable experiences that will support their academic journey as they move on to study GCSE Geography.
