Spanish Spelling and Translation Success

Two boys at Stamford School have won the East Midlands final of the National Spanish Spelling Bee, which was this year held virtually this year.Isaac Solly and Riley Vines (Year 8) have been awarded 1st and 2nd place in the East Midlands Final of the competition, having qualified for the regional finals before lockdown. The 'live' finals are usually held at Stamford in April, but were cancelled this year, meaning the competition moved online. The boys began practicising in September, and submitted their video entries translating and spelling as many words as they could in one minute. They how have 100 more words to learn and practice, before submitting their next video entry by the 18th December for the National final round. In this round, they will be spelling from a list of 300 words in total.Mrs Pike, Head of Spanish at Stamford, said: "Both boys have attended regular after school and lunch time practices, and have obviously also worked very hard at home to learn the words and to be able to perform at this level. Congratulations!"Two Year 10 pupils at Stamford have also seen success in the partner competiton, the Spanish Translation Bee. Rohan Alexander and Louie Raybould have qualified for the National Finals of the Translation Bee, which follows a similar format to the Spelling Bee.Good luck to both pairs in the next rounds. For more news about the Stamford Endowed Schools' community, please click here.Alumni banner
