Stamford Schools were pleased to welcome back Old Stamfordian Henry Wills (OS16) to present 1st XV captain James Egerton with the Robert Wills Memorial Cup on Monday 27th November. The cup is traditionally presented at the first home game of the season against Uppingham, which this year saw a Stamford victory by 46-13 back in September.
The Robert Wills memorial cup is a symbol of sportsmanship and triumph. Robert Wills, well-known in both Uppingham and Stamford, was a dedicated benefactor of Stamford School. He sent his three children Philippa, Harriet and Henry to the Schools, with his son Henry making a name for himself in rugby, both at Stamford and beyond. Robert Wills spent countless Saturdays cheering for Stamford's rugby teams, even after Henry left in 2016.
Mr Davies, Deputy Head of Stamford Schools, comments: “The Memorial Cup is a tribute to Mr Wills’ unwavering support and embodies the values he held dear. It symbolizes excellence, teamwork, and community spirit, all of which are true Stamfordian values. Robert Wills was an inspirational man, who loved all that the game of rugby provides to those young people lucky enough to play it.”
