Fives Success at the Lady’s Cup, Cambridge University

Stamford students and staff members have seen success at a Fives Competition in Cambridge.Pupils from both Stamford School and Stamford High School have played in a Fives tournament at Cambridge University’s courts, which are some of the newest in the country. The 'Lady’s Cup' was held at Cambridge University Sports Centre and involved a number of doubles fives competitions, where each pair had to include at least one female player of school age, or an older female beginner.Stamford brought a team of students from across Stamford School and Stamford High School, with staff members getting involved too. Two parents, Mrs Drutman and Mrs Tyler, partnered together, while coach Mr Smith paired up with Ms Fletcher, acting Head of Sport at Stamford High School.Stamford Schools enjoyed success across all the competitions:The Lady’s Plate was won by Year 8 and Year 9 pupils Bea G and Rory J, beating their friends Hari J and Emily T (also both Year 8) in the final. The Lady’s Bowl was won by Cameron D (Year 10) who teamed up with Tarn C-J, the Cambridge Women’s Fives Captain, playing Cam’s fellow Stamfordians Connor M and Izzy S, while Dan B and Jasmine W won the Skills Challenge. Finally, Ms Fletcher played so well (as a self-confessed complete beginner!) that she and Mr Smith won the semi-final and final (both very narrowly) to secure the Lady’s Cup itself, to much applause from their pupils!Mr Smith, Fives Coach, said: “It was great to see the mixed pairs from the Schools playing so well, and I was particularly pleased that they were complimented for being so enthusiastic and well organised in their competitions. Thanks also to Ms Fletcher for pairing with me and playing so well for a complete beginner to win us the Cup!”For more news on Fives at Stamford, please click here.Banner 2021 - Sport Girls
