On Thursday 27 October, an audience of more than 300 people were treated to a superb and uplifting evening of music played by the Band of the Royal Air Force College, and the Stamford Schools were delighted to support the Mayor of Stamford, Councillor David Taylor, by hosting this fund-raising concert in aid of the Mayor’s charities.
Formed in 1920 at RAF College Cranwell, the band has forged a reputation of musical and military excellence, performing at many prestigious ceremonial and state events. Just this year they have performed at The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebration, as well as lining the route in Windsor for Her Majesty’s funeral.
Under conductor, Squadron Leader Richard A Murray, the programme included popular tunes from the musicals along with a selection of marches and other rousing pieces. Selected pieces played included ‘Pequenza Czarda’, ‘Maria’, from West Side Story, a Glenn Miller medley and, a particular highlight, ‘The Pridelands’, a Hans Zimmer composition for ‘The Lion King’.
While a concert from the Band of the Welsh Guards three weeks earlier saw some of our students perform with the band, this latest concert, although with no students, highlights the Schools’ connection with the community. Tickets for the evening were free of charge, and the evening was a big success with around £3,000 raised for the Royal Air Force Association and the Royal British Legion.
