Children at SJS investigate outdoors

Children at Stamford Junior School love to learn outside, no matter the weather! We’ve heard about all the discoveries that our Year 4 and Year 6 children have been making in the grounds of SJS.As part of their biology topic, Year 4 have been on an ‘Invertebrates Hunt’. The pupils spent their lessons outdoors foraging in the soil and leaves, using trowels, petri-dishes, and magnifying glasses. They were observing, drawing, and noting down the number of legs and body parts the invertebrates had, to classify them as either insects, arachnids, isopods, molluscs, or annelids. They concluded that the best place to find invertebrates was deep down in the leaves and by the edge of the sports hall field.Pupils in Year 6 have also been making the most of the sunny weather as they spent their science lesson identifying and classifying plants. Many of the pupils found dandelions in different stages, as bright yellow flowers, or as dandelion clocks.Mrs Britton, a Key Stage Two teacher at SJS, said: “The children were buzzing about everything that they noticed and asked plenty of great questions to help them along in their learning journey”.[gallery link="none" columns="1" size="full" ids="https://www.stamfordschools.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Y4-Invertebrate-hunt-3.jpg|,https://www.stamfordschools.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Y4-Invertebrate-hunt-4.jpg|,https://www.stamfordschools.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Y4-Invertebrate-hunt.jpeg|,https://www.stamfordschools.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Y6-Science-classifying-plants-002.jpg|"]For more news from Stamford Junior School, please click here.why stamford banner
