To celebrate British Science week, we interviewed one of Stamford's longest-serving male teachers, Mr. Porteus, who is both a excellent biology teacher and a brilliant person who lights up classrooms whenever he is teaching.
How long have you been at Stamford for:
I have been at Stamford for over 25 years, I came in 1998 as head of Biology and then became head of science and I retired last year, but I’m back! I am mainly teaching at the Sixth form but sometimes at the Senior school.
What are the most interesting parts of the biology classroom:
Everything is interesting in the biology department, from animals, to plants, to bacteria, to all sorts of living organisms, it’s what makes biology the best subject on the planet.
What is your favourite quote:
‘Nobody regrets doing well at school’ so make sure you take full advantage of everything at school, not just your academic work, but all the amazing extracurricular opportunities that students have.
Out of all the lessons you have taught, what’s your favourite topic to teach:
I quite enjoy teaching neurophysiology, that’s my favourite.
Mr. Porteus from his first year in 1998.
