Monday 8th May 2023
On the 5th of May 2023, our Year 6’s at Stamford Junior School received a visit from the Young Shakespeare Company, a touring company of professional actors and storytellers who bring Shakespeare’s plays to life and have been inspiring educational theatre since 1988.
Their projects have been cited by the Arts Council as an example of excellence in arts education practice. Every year, they work with 100,000 children in over 800 schools, so we are extremely lucky to have had them at Stamford! The day consisted of the whole year group taking part within an interactive portrayal of William Shakespeare’s, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, which was magical to say the least.
The pupils had fun learning the play through physical storytelling, which was led by a group of four strong actors. This day long workshop and participatory theatre experience took the pupils through the story whilst maintaining engagement and entertainment for them. It was exciting for them to either play one of the main parts and act in front of their peers, or watch their friends become the characters! The company incorporated items of costume in order to differentiate between different characters within the story and props for them to play around and explore the story with. As the students begin to learn about Shakespeare and his plays, they will remember this experience and use it within their learning.
